Man Crushed To Death By Bulldozer In Central PA ID'd By Coroner

An 81-year-old man was crushed to death when a bulldozer rolled down a hill and landed on him, authorities say.

The Ephrata police had been called to a report of "a person run over by a bulldozer," in Ephrata on Monday, Oct. 17 at approximately 2 p.m. the department stated in a release later that night.

Emergency crews found "one man was killed after being struck by the bulldozer," in the 600 block of Mount Airy Road, West Cocalico Township, the police say.

Authorities soon learned that he was one of two men who had been "cutting trees in a nearby ravine when the bulldozer rolled down the hill," the police detail in the release.

The man was later identified as Walter Shirk, of Ephrata, when a deputy coroner with the Lancaster County Forensic Center pronounced him deceased at 3:15 p.m., according to a release by the center the following day.

"Shirk was transported to the Lancaster County Forensic Center for a further examination. His cause and manner of death are currently pending," the coroner's office says.
